If you're specifying structural panels for a European construction project, you've encountered the EN 300 standard and the OSB grades it defines. This guide explains what EN 300 actually tests, what differentiates OSB1 through OSB4, and when OSB4 is the right specification for your project.
What is EN 300?
EN 300 is the European standard "Oriented Strand Boards (OSB) — Definitions, classification and specifications" (EN 300:2006). It defines four performance classes (OSB1 through OSB4) based on mechanical performance and moisture resistance, and sets the minimum requirements for each class.
EN 300 is the reference standard for CE marking of OSB panels under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and EN 13986 (Wood-based panels in construction). A panel cannot be CE marked for structural applications in the EU without meeting EN 300 (or an equivalent recognized standard).

Use Environment Classes
EN 300 references the EN 1995-1-1 (Eurocode 5) service classes for defining moisture exposure:
- Service Class 1: Moisture content of materials corresponds to a temperature of 20°C and relative humidity of the surrounding air exceeding 65% only a few weeks per year. Average moisture content in most softwoods ≤ 12%.
- Service Class 2: Moisture content corresponds to 20°C and RH exceeding 85% only a few weeks per year. Average ≤ 20%.
- Service Class 3: Climatic conditions leading to higher moisture content than Service Class 2.
OSB1 and OSB2 are suitable for Service Class 1. OSB3 and OSB4 are suitable for Service Classes 1 and 2. For exterior applications or high-humidity environments, OSB4 is the conservative specification.
EN 300 Performance Requirements (18 mm panel)
EN 300 sets minimum requirements for bending strength (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), internal bond, and thickness swell after water immersion. For an 18 mm panel, the key requirements are:

OSB4 requirements are approximately 35% higher for MOR/MOE and 50% higher for internal bond than OSB2/OSB3. The thickness swell requirement is also tighter (12% vs. 15–20%).

BAMOSB BOSB-S18 substantially exceeds EN 300 OSB4 minimums across all properties. This margin is intentional: it provides engineering confidence for designers specifying to the standard, and it compensates for in-service conditions that may exceed standard test conditions.
When to Specify OSB4
OSB4 is the right specification when:
- The panel will see sustained humidity exposure (roof sheathing, exterior wall sheathing behind a rainscreen, subfloor over a crawl space)
- The application is load-bearing structural (load-bearing walls, prefabricated panels, I-joist webs)
- The structure may experience occasional wetting during construction before enclosure is complete
- The local building code or project specification calls for "OSB4" or equivalent
- The project is in a coastal or high-humidity climate
- The structure must demonstrate resilience under disaster conditions (seismic, hurricane, flood)
For interior dry applications (interior partition walls, ceiling panels, furniture), OSB2 or OSB3 may be sufficient and more cost-effective.
How to Verify EN 300 Compliance
When sourcing OSB panels, verify:
- Test reports: Mill-issued EN 300 test reports for the specific product and thickness. Reports should be issued by an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited lab.
- CE marking: Panels must carry the CE mark with the manufacturer's Declaration of Performance (DoP) referencing EN 13986.
- Notified body number: The CE mark must include the four-digit number of the notified body that performed initial type testing and ongoing factory production control audits.
- Annual audit reports: EN 300 and CE compliance require ongoing factory production control. Verify the mill has current audit reports.
- DoP availability: Manufacturers must publish DoPs on their website. Verify your supplier provides DoPs for all products.
EN 300 vs. Other Standards
EN 300 is the most widely specified standard for OSB in European and international markets, but other regional standards exist:
- North America: PS 2 (Performance Standard for Wood-Based Structural-Use Panels) and CSA O325 (Construction Sheathing). PR-N616 and APA marks indicate compliance.
- Japan: JIS A 5908 (Particleboards) and JIS A 5905 (Fiberboards). For structural OSB, JIS A 5908 with structural grade is the reference.
- China: GB/T 4897 (Particleboard) and LY/T 1580 (Oriented Strand Board). Compliance with EN 300 generally exceeds GB requirements.
For international projects, EN 300 is often the conservative specification as it provides the broadest acceptance.
Specifying BAMOSB BOSB-S18
To specify BAMOSB BOSB-S18 in your project documentation, use the following language:
Structural panels shall be 100% bamboo oriented strand board, classified to EN 300 type OSB/4 (load-bearing, humid conditions), with minimum bending strength of 30 N/mm² parallel and 16 N/mm² perpendicular, minimum modulus of elasticity of 4,800 N/mm² parallel, and maximum thickness swell of 12% after 24-hour water immersion. Manufacturer shall hold FSC Chain of Custody certification. Panels shall be formaldehyde E0 / NAF (zero added formaldehyde) per EN 13986. Acceptable product: BAMOSB BOSB-S18 18 mm or equivalent.
